This course will serve as the first course in robotics to provide a wholistic overview of the field of robotics. It introduces the basic concepts of robotics and applications of robotics technology in industrial and service domains. Fundamentals of the contributing domains of robotics engineering (i.e. Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics & Computer Science) and the main component technologies (i.e. Perception, Cognition and Action) will be explained with emphasis on the integration of these components in the construct of robotics systems. Societal impacts and ethical issues of robot deployment will be discussed, including both the positive and negative aspects.
