The course will provide you with a critical engagement of canonical examples of English literature (poetry, drama, prose fiction) from the period 1660-1800. Throughout the course, we will examine fictional works in relation to influential theoretical or polemical texts of the period in order to contextualize them in terms of their intellectual, historical, and cultural milieu. By the end of the course, you will be able to articulate how various authorities and identities are negotiated (or constructed) within the forum of fictional literature.
