This course introduces you to canonical texts in Singapore literature from the twentieth and twenty- first centuries. You will develop knowledge and understanding of a variety of forms including poems, novels, memoirs, films, and plays. Themes include: the formation of Singapore as a nation- state and the development of national identity; tensions in the usage of "standard" and colloquial English; multiculturalism and the negotiation of social constraints within different communities.
