This course will introduce students to a broad range of critical issues in the development of Singapore as a state and especially as a society. Our examination of the debates and controversies around these issues will lead to a deeper understanding of Singapore's past and present as we prepare for its future. Considerable attention will be paid to the role of the dominant PAP government and its far-reaching policies, but the contributions of private citizens and groups will also be appreciated. The course will provide ample opportunities for students to address our national conversations on democracy, citizenship, governance, nationhood and other key themes.
